Saying goodbye to dialysis

Vacation, vacation andddd… after vacation? Not quite. The first trip after the kidney transplant, despite the fact that it was preceded by a lot of doubts and stress, ultimately turned out to be a hit. But in order to move forward, to „get the wind in my sails,” I need a break from the dialysis stage. How much I’ve learned about myself, how many things I’ve learned, how many steps forward I’ve taken- this will still stay with me.

You just have to change the way you think

From the current- „if I can do it…”, to: „it’s that time, let’s start taking action”. At the same time, I don’t put pressure on myself. A little at the end of dialysis I was already tense, that time was passing, that I was missing something, that I was standing still. It’s just that this didn’t lead to anything except blocking myself. So now I want to do everything the way I feel. And why do I know that this will lead me to a cool place? Because (despite everything a little unconsciously) during dialysis I had time to be with myself. I’d really like it to ring out from this post that you can get a surprising amount out of dialysis. You don’t have to or even can’t put pressure on yourself to act, but that doesn’t mean you’re at a loss. Give yourself time to get used to your new lifestyle. You can’t escape the changes that dialysis brings to your life. A new diet, lack of strength, a visit to the hospital every two days. BUT…

After the right time for you, when dialysis becomes your new daily life – get started

Get back on track, adjust your new daily life to your life before dialysis. Dialysis therapy can take several months to several years. It’s a shame to waste all that time mourning your old lifestyle. Where to start?

Talk to your health care provider. Ask what dialysis is, what it involves, what it entails. The more you understand, the easier it will be to adapt to the new reality. Ask about your diet, the amount of fluids you consume, how you will feel after dialysis and how your body will change during dialysis.

If you are preparing for a transplant, consult with your doctor about your plan of action.

Discuss your treatment plan
Find out what tests you need to do, to be put on the waiting list
Ask when you will be able to start the entire transplant preparation process
Consult if it is possible to have some of the tests done in the hospital on a 2-3 day hospital visit (this option allows you to have many tests done faster)
Arm yourself with patience

Remind yourself. Look for solutions- if you have the opportunity look for appointments at private facilities, if not- look for nfz appointments at various facilities. Write down the dates of each test so that you have time to repeat it before the year is out.

If you are starting dialysis-I wish you a lot of strength, patience and adapt to the new situation as soon as possible.
If someone close to you is starting dialysis– give that person time. This is a really big change and everyone can experience it in their own way. At the same time, more frequent stays in the hospital do not make this person just a patient. He or she will be your friend, buddy, sister/brother, parent or grandparent all the time.

If you need some advice about the transplant preparation process, or some dialysis hints on how to make this time easier- text me;)

Take care,
